Fellow Members,
The economy dominates many of our lives at the moment as we see unprecedented problems across the globe. Hong Kong people are very resilient and on a local level the Club is still doing very well and is firmly on track for its budgetary targets for 2008. Let's hope the economic storm clouds blow away soon.
It is with great regret that I must announce the passing of a prominent and very popular Member Mr. David Edwards. David fell ill while playing squash at the Club recently, a sport that he has loved for many years, and he did not recover. As a personal friend and fellow squash player I hope you will join me in sending our condolences and deepest sympathies to David's family and wide circle of friends. A celebration of David's association with the USRC and his life in Hong Kong from our Squash Convenor and GC member Les Pearce can be found in this issue of In Bloom. David will be sadly missed by us all.
The GC has approved funding for the basic phases of refurbishment of the Oceania and Grill Room facility but this may take a while before work commences. We will keep you all informed on the progress of this project. Meanwhile I'm told that the refurbished Garden Room is so popular that it is fully booked at weekends through the remainder of the year.
Looking ahead for the remainder of the year, we are preparing for the usual round of functions as we approach the Christmas and New Year period so we hope you will consider the Club for some of your parties and family gatherings as well as joining in the organised club functions.
As this will be the final edition of In Bloom for 2008 I would like to wish our USRC members, families and friends all the very best for the remainder of this year and its associated festivities. Let's hope 2009 is prosperous and healthy for everyone.
My best regards to all,

Ross Parker
Chairman
