DAVID EDWARDS

"Most people live and die with their music still unplayed.
They never dare to try" (Mary Kay Ash).

This sentiment could never be applied to David Edwards, who sadly passed away while playing squash at the Club on 11th October.

David was a highly personable companion, a loyal friend to those who knew him well and someone whose enthusiasm and zest for life was infectious. Few of his acquaintances were aware, however, of the extent of his accomplishments and the true calibre of the man. David not only dared to try, but succeeded beyond most people's ambitions across an astonishingly varied spectrum.

Not many can aspire to membership of Mensa, the organisation that admits only those whose IQ is within the top 2 percent of the world's population. David was a member.

With Degrees in such disparate disciplines as Engineering, Business Management, Criminal Justice and Accountancy, David put his intellect to good use.

After serving for 9 years in the Hong Kong Police Force until 1983, he turned his talents to business. Since then, his rapidly expanding business interests took him to over 90 countries, and to every province in China. He was fluent in Cantonese and Mandarin.

But intellect and business acumen tell only part of the story. David lived life to the full, finding plenty of time for leisure and sport. Again, he was not satisfied with second best. He became a Judo champion while in Britain and played Bridge at international level. The USRC Bridge team, that he formed and led in 2006, won the HK league in its first year, causing (as David enjoyed relating) more than a little consternation among the "established" Bridge clubs here.

There is much more: Two years ago, David received the China Peace Award for contribution to world peace. This high accolade speaks volumes of the trust and respect accorded to a man who was clearly no ordinary western businessman plying his trade in China and throughout the World.

If life is likened to a symphony, David's came to an end suddenly and tragically before the final movement. Throughout his life, however, David's music played with gusto, integrity and a joie de vivre that will be remembered and cherished by all those who were fortunate to have known him. None of us could hope for a greater legacy.
