Winter League 2011
Men's B missed out in the playoff, not by merit as they had beaten the team in their group that went into the playoff but because they ran out of time to complete the rain-postponed matches. Both Men's C and D ranked in mid-table, having secured early in the season the two wins that should allow them to stay in their respective divisions. The two Men's E occupied opposite ends of their division. E1, setting out to grab one of the two promotion spots, narrowly missed out by finishing third (better luck for them next season!) while E2, setting out just to enjoy playing, finished last. Both Ladies' A+ completed the season in mid-table while Ladies' C ranked last in their rebuilding season, having lost a few players after finishing second the season before.
Service to Hong Kong Tennis Association
Our members, Ronnie Cheng and Gary Sze, have been elected as council members of HKTA in December. Before this election, Ronnie has already been serving in the Education Committee while Gary is in the Finance Committee and the League Management Committee. Both feel the honour to be able to serve HKTA on behalf of USRC.
Centenary Tournament and Annual Dinner
To commemorate the centenary of USRC, the Tennis Section organised a tournament on November 19 in which seven visiting pairs (Lions Club, American Club, Shamshuipo Sports Association, Club Recreio, Jockey Club, Spotlight Club and Hong Kong Cricket Club) and nine home pairs participated. Compressed round robin matches were played within the four groups, with the top two teams of each group entering the CUP competition whereas all the remaining teams going for the Plate competition.
In the respective finals, while Gary Sze and Doug Goodwin won the Cup by beating Eddy Wu and Delme Pritchard (6-4) in a pulsating match, the Plate was won by Spotlight Club, who comprised two Men's B players and saw off the challenge (6-3) of KK Lau and Derek Lai, both playing for our Men's D team.
To round off a memorable day, our players and the guests joined the BBQ lamb dinner at the marquee. During the dinnertime, trophies, both for the centenary tournament and for the annual club tournament, were presented and contributions from past and current league team captains were recognised.
